The Journey is a non-digital card game about telling stories. Based on the work of Joseph Campbell in The Hero With a Thousand Faces, players take on the roles of the forces of good and evil in a classic Hero’s Journey.
The Journey uses game rules to help players form the structure of a narrative based on Campbell’s literary theory and encourages them to fill this structure with inventive narrative. This approach was taken as a test and exploration into concepts surrounding the creation of procedural narrative in digital games by utilizing the strengths of both computers and human designers to improve on the weaknesses of each in content creation. the end goal is to suggest a way that digital games can produce varied narratives on the fly that appear less artificial than current techniques in use.
